"Golden Boy" Br Bobby Casingal FSC with Lizzie and Henry Atayde
When one turns into a "Golden Boy," why not turn some "golden hits" into gold? And that's exactly what [LSGH76] Br Bobby Casingal FSC did last week when he celebrated his fiftieth birthday. It was "Karaoke for Kwarta," "Music for Money" and "Sing-along for Spondulicks." Wanna test your vocal chords? Well, put some bucks in the basket first.
And his fellow Brothers and friends gamely took over the mike ...
... and the dance floor, too!
Sonny Alvarez [DLSC HS64] shakes his booty while serving a platter of pulutan.
Br Flip Belleza boogies with one of the better-halves.
At the end of the night, Br Bobby turned over the cash that was raised to Br Manny Sia of our La Salle School in Bagac.

"I went to this gathering in Burke, Virginia, 23 miles from my home last Saturday 12:00 noon, July 26. The organizers rented a site at the park with a barbecue pit. It was a very hot humid day ... 88 degrees Fahrenheit with 85% humidity.

"The first alumnus to arrive was Albertito Aluisag, a La Salle Taft Business graduate, who just migrated 4 months ago. He sells Toyotas in Alexandria, Virginia at Jack Taylor Toyota.
"Each of us had to nominate 5 Directors of the Board who would then choose the officers among themselves.
Lynn with Eileen Nadal
"The incoming president is Eileen Nadal, Class 84 La Salle Taft. She organized the event. The food was cholesterol rich but good. We were about 30 strong ... from Class 61 High School to Class 97 La Salle Taft College. We must have had at least four couples, both Lasallites.
"I was told that we have two alumni working at the embassy; one is a Vice Consul. So for those of you who may need something there one day, we have an alumnus on our side. I believe one is Class 91 La Salle Taft and one from the 80s.
Lynn with Eladio Gonzales
"The outgoing president Eladio Gonzales has a website called Market America retailing all kinds of stuff online. He's really been dedicated to growing this chapter. These guys have a good system here; there is accountability. And maybe because we are so far from home, they all get along quite well."

Elections were held during our well attended annual picnic at Burke Lake Park.
First to arrive was Tito Alisuag a Lipa High School alumni. Soon after, Philippine Cultural Attaché Rico Fos arrived with his family.
I thank all who came and participated in the elections and for those who volunteered to help make this event possible. The kid games volunteers Malu Araque and Wilma Reyes. Thank you Tito Alisuag, Rico Fos, Ron Diokno and Johnny Roque for helping grill the delicious pork bbq prepared by none other than our new president elect Eileen Nadal. Recipe is available with a $100 donation to the association. Special thanks to our COMELEC chair Prospy Hernandez for preparing and canvassing the ballots.
I thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve you as President. It has opened doors and led me to meet new friends within our DC community, worldwide and specially at home in Manila.
Our membership increased and new minds with fresh ideas are always welcome. We hope to reach more Lasalians out there in the Washington DC, Virginia and Maryland area.
We contributed to the Bahay Pag-asa project and recently Br. Gus Boquer shared a news release announcing the <href=http://www.dasma.dlsu.edu.ph/ICO/archive/2008_archive/newsapril2008b.pdf
>groundbreaking ceremonies for Bahay Pag-asa in Dasmarinas last May 22.
Last January 2008 we launched our One La Salle fundraising program and named it Operation Alkansiya. Operation Alkansiya is a 3 year effort where we allow the alumni to contribute small amounts each month (or lump sum if desired) where it adds up to a significant donation at the end of the year. We are set to send out our first donations via Ayala Foundation by second week of December 2008. It is not too late to learn more and participate in this worthy effort.
We participated in various community fundraisers and events most noteworthy is our recent entry in the Philippine Independence Day Parade in Washington DC. A good size number of alumni participated together with our Hikers and Bikers group. Next year we hope to do even better.
Our camping trip at that Shenandoah Mountains was awesome! We definitely should make this a yearly event.
I wish the new President and her board God’s blessings and continued success. I’m very optimistic that our new group of officers will even be more dynamic and will accomplish more than we ever did. We are enjoying a surge of new members and very exciting projects to come. I heard very encouraging words like active networking, community outreach as well as stronger fellowship among members.
I also wish the members to not be afraid to step up to the plate and swing the bat a few times. Nothing happens when we wait for someone else to do it! We need to all get out of our comfort zone and venture out to the new and unfamiliar. It is normal for us to resist, but guess what … If you don’t, you will be pushed … so might as well do it in your terms!
So there … In my last official email to you as your President … I hope you have found some things worthy as well as pursue things that could use some improvement.
I am now a regular member (with lifetime membership!). I should say that I am proud to be part of this team and I’m proud to be a La Salle Alumni!
Animo La Salle!

Dear Fellow Lasallians,
The organizers of the One Run One Family One La Salle (OROFOLS) are pleased with the progress of the registration campaign. Here are the initial results of our appeal for active participation and support from the Lasallian community.
DLS-Canlubang
The first school to commit to send multi-sectoral participation is Br. Kenneth Martinez of DLS Canlubang. Upon the launch of the OROFOLS, Br. Ken and his team immediately committed to send two (2) buses and one (1) van of participants, numbering some 100 runners. Br. Ken will even lead his delegation on July 13, Sunday, at The Fort (Taguig).
DLS-College of St. Benilde (CSB)
Br. Vic Franco and Ms. Mela Lazatin have assembled an impressive team of Benildean students, faculty and staff. They expect some 500 to 600 runners to participate in the inaugural event. In addition, Mr. Adolf Aran, the incumbent DLS-CSBAA President promises to send a sizeable alumni delegation to complement their collegiate team.
DLSU-Manila
Although the organizers are still awaiting the estimated number of participants from DLSU Manila, it has received strong endorsement and support from Br. Armin Luistro, Dean Voc Mistades and Dean Virgilia Calabio to send a large multi-sectoral delegation, including its UAAP athletes.
The organizers have likewise received encouraging support from various DLSU-M Student Organizations. For example, the Electronic & Communications Engineering Society (ECES) have committed to send some 150 members.
The organizers have extended invitation to LSGH, DLS Zobel, DLS Dasmarinas and the Health & Science Institute, DLS Antipolo, DLS Araneta, DLS Lipa and we expect to hear from them soon.
We hope to assemble some 5,000 Lasallians and friends in this inaugural event to launch La Salle Cares and help the One La Salle Scholarship Fund.
We are told that our Brother Visitor, Br. Edmundo Fernandez, and DLSP President, Br. Arimn Luistro, will lead our community in this historic event. We hope to see you at the Starting Line on July 13, Sunday, at The Fort (near NBC Tent). Assembly and pre-race instructions at 5:30am and race shall commence promptly at 6:00am.
We urge you to register soon before slots run out. For more details please visit OROFOLS website at: www.lasallecares.org/orofols/ (on-line registration is also available).

FEEDBACK
Tony Cervantes wrote [Thu, Jun 19, 2008 at 6:53 AM]: This was the grand event in which we gave our commemorative book, dedicated to the Christian Brothers and HS. '58, for posterity by giving all the District Schools a copy, one for the Provincialate headed by Br. Dodo, and two for the DLSAA.
This was also the event attended by seven of the HS. '58 singly ...and I might add, an event that sorely needed the rest of the batch who unfortunately were unable to make it in the majority.
Thank you, Mon Torres, for lending your talent to the occasion. I did wake up 5:30 am. that day to ensure that I was there at 7 am. for the sound technicians to place your required sound system for you to practice at 8 am.
Thank you, Ernie Martinez, for gracing the occasion. I was certain that you would join us after you committed to do so.
Thank you, son of my baptismal godmother, for again lending me your relics. I shall soon find a more adequate supply of monstrances to make all levitate ...and to drive home the point for a traveling peace caravan in the campuses to be mounted soon in the immediate future. I shall keep you anonymous as requested.
Thank you, members of the Silver Jubilarian batch of '83. We shall continue to keep our bonds that strong.
Thank you, student volunteers from the different disciplines, We also always enjoy being with the youth. We shall, however, have to soon get a larger number of students to attend the alumni events...and help out where we can if you so choose to have our help.
I shall be calling again on you, George Yang, when your schedules allow to also lend us your talents.
Most especially, thank you all in the Lasallian Pastoral Office, DLSAA, the Homecoming Council, the 49ers, and my fellow LaSallites for showing your commitment.
But most of all, thank you my dear friends and mentors, the Christian Brothers for continuing to make our golden jubilee year that much more meaningful with your presence.
We shall continue to seek you all out with our traveling Mass !
No, Fr. Merino, I have not forgotten you. Thank you again, primo !
Tony Cervantes
PS. Truth tell, I had hoped for a larger crowd, particularly the contingents from the GS. and HS. Chapter and the other chapters by discipline, whichever.
I shall keep my peace about some batch's glaring absence !
PS2 There is the scheduled June 29 Mass at DLSU-Greenhills. It also marks the 7th Anniversary of the Family Mass.
It is also the first time that a District School has reached out to other District School alumni et al to attend...at least to my knowledge.
Now that day should mark a great milestone and all are enjoined to join, not-withstanding my realizing later after making the trumpet call much earlier, that it is again also the big fight day of Manny Pacquiao !
"May God bless tomorrow with more men in robes."

More than 150 participants (Brothers, teachers, administrators, students, alumni) from all 17 District Schools will converge here in Green Hills and will discuss the future of the Lasallian Family.
In the next three days, we will be planning what we will do as a Lasallian Family... how make Lasallian education more responsive to the needs of the students and the country... what we will commit to do in order to further the cause of peace, justice and the environment... how we can make One La Salle more real and more felt... how we can accompany each other to become better Lasallians...

Yesterday (May 15, 2008) was the feast day of St. John Baptist de La
Salle and the first year anniversary of De La Salle-College
of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB)'s strikingly modern School
of Design and Arts (SDA) Campus. To celebrate that special day was the unveiling of a "large-scale wall installation" that features the
embroidery products of Lumban, Laguna.
Dubbed "[re]frame-manila," the design project was aimed at assisting artisans in Laguna, particularly in Lumban, apply their traditional creative practices to new and contemporary contexts. The project is a collaboration between DLS-CSB, Pinagkaisang Magbuburda ng Lumban (PML), and The Omnium Research Group based at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia.
CSB President Br Vic Franco FSC (center) is surrounded by [re]frame team members
The [re]frame concept focuses on the detailed and intricate
nature of existing traditional Filipino embroidery techniques by framing off
small sections of the work and placing them in an entirely new contemporary
context.
Embroidery is one of the world's oldest crafts. It involves
creative stitching that transforms woven cloth into intricately designed and
luxurious fabrics. In the Philippines,
typical materials embroidered on include materials indigenous to the Philippines,
such as piña, jusi, filsilk, abaca, cotton ramie or pinukpok. Embroidered products may also be dyed, painted on or beaded
as an additional decorative elements. Lumban burdaderos (embroiderers) have learned the tradition
and craft from their elders, with technology and techniques learned through
experience. Over 900 women of the town do embroidery work. Lumban is distinguished especially for their hand-painted
designs and the calado or drawn-thread work, which is characterized by net-like
patterns on the fabric.
However, despite being celebrated as the burda (embroidery)
capital of the Philippines,
most of the Lumban burdaderos actually come from poor members of the community
who provide cheap labor for the few well-off establishments that have markets
in Manila. The income they generate from the production of the
embroideries is very low and the work hours are long and laborious. Many other
parties are also involved in the process of creating these products, which
dilutes the final profit.
Another issue faced by the embroiderers is the embroidered
products themselves. The embroideries are beautiful and intricate, yet demand
is seasonal as designs and uses are extremely traditional, such as for Filipino
formal wear. This issue makes sustainable commercial viability difficult for
the embroiderers.
Through the exhibit, it is hoped that new product concepts can be explored and developed. The end-goal is to bring the textiles into a new and modern context so as to increase their marketability, create a new support system to empower the small-time embroiderers of PML, and ultimately, generate more sustainable income for the artisans, as well as explore additional product and livelihood options in the area. The key to this idea of reframing and re-contextualization of the embroideries is that the embroideries do not remain simply an artistic installation, but rather a marketable product.
The installation is 4.8 meters wide by 11 meters high and consists of over 2,500 embroidery pieces, each framed with recycled timber, all produced locally.
Pinagkaisang
Magbuburda ng Lumban rep gives a talk before the unveiling
For this installation, each framed detail of textile can
also be viewed as individual pieces that can be used on their own as personal
or interior design or personal accents. Within this context, the embroideries
are seen in a new and modern light, yet the traditional craftsmanship remains
unaltered. The use of the embroideries is broadened from formal wear to a
contemporary and unique interior design installation.
The re-contextualization aims to create a stronger, more
direct income for the community. The installation at DLS-CSB's state-of-the-art
SDA campus, for example, meant additional labor carried out within the Lumban community,
thus strengthening the work demand for the PML while also supplying a new
stream of work for the woodworkers of Pakil, Laguna in the form of creating the
frames. In addition, the ongoing cross-collaboration between Benilde
and UNSW in the research and design process aims to ultimately result in a
self-sustaining artisan community in Lumban.
The ties that bind DLS-CSB to Lumban go as far back as 1995
when the College began various programs in the community, such as student
immersion activities, annual coastal clean-ups, livelihood development
programs, and other forms of community service. It was in 2002, through the College's Microfinance Project
and the then Caucus for Poverty Reduction under the De La Salle System, when
PML was organized. Responding to the need for marketing support expressed by
small-time embroiderers in Lumban, Laguna, the organization hoped to enable the
community to maintain the quality and sustain the tradition of producing
embroidered products.
The inspiration for the piece
In 2004, a stronger commitment was forged between PML and
DLS-CSB when it became a partner of the College in its Community Development
Program. In 2006, the school partnered with the UNSW for postgraduate programs
in design and arts. The partnership later on expanded to involve more than just
academic concerns. With a vision of aiding creative communities in various
locations around the globe, UNSW's Omnium Research Group joined PML and DLS-CSB
in 2007 in developing a design project that would eventually become
[re]frame-manila.
