Mr. James Michael Lafferty, President of Procter and Gamble Philippines, visited De La Salle Lipa last Wednesday, October 3. He was joined by his wife, Ms. Susan Anne Lafferty. Also present during the visit was Mrs. Michelle Reyes of the Corporate Sales of Northwest Airlines. Mrs. Reyes was accompanied by her husband, PBA sportscaster Mr. Erick Reyes.
During his short meeting with Br. Manuel R. Pajarillo FSC, Mr. Lafferty shared his experience with some of the countries where he was assigned to market P&G products. He likewise discussed his interest in sports, being a head coach of track and field in the US. Being an athlete, Mr. Lafferty's visit to De La Salle Lipa will not be complete without visiting our Track Oval and Sentrum. He enjoyed some time watching the kids play at the oval and at the Centen.
The group proceeded to the MB Mini Auditorium where he narrated his personal experiences to DLSL administrators, faculty, staff, and Nursing students. In his speech, he talked about his first years of working in Procter and Gamble as well as his experience in administering CPR to the father of Mr. Romil Silva, DLSL Graduate Program Coordinator, in Nagoya Airport, Japan. Dubbed as "the modern day Good Samaritan” by Mr. Silva, Mr. Lafferty reiterated the three choices one should make out of his life. These are: to make the world a better place, to make the world the way you see it, or to make the world worse. Saving lives means saving an entire civilization. That is what made him proud of Procter and Gamble, emphasizing their corporate mission of “improving the lives of consumers” on top of creating more profits. Corporate responsibility is also on the priority list of P&G. They extend free services to Gawad Kalinga and to the country’s remote areas.
Mr. & Mrs. Lafferty and Mr. & Mrs. Reyes were also toured
around Lipa by Mr. Arnold Capuloy, DLSL’s Director for International
Linkages. They went to the Carmel Church where Mr. Lafferty spent a
quiet
time to reflect and pray.

They were accompanied by the Vice-Chancellor for Academics and Research Dr. Corazon L. Abansi, Dean of the College of Business, Economics, Accountancy and Management Mr. Amelito Castillo, and Tourism Department Chair Ms. Joy Zapata.
The delegation attended an exhibition of schools offering programs in Tourism and HRM. They also participated in an international lecture by Dr. Andrew Nazarechuk, Dean of the University of Las Vegas. According to the UNLV (University of Nevada – Las Vegas), “Dr. Nazarechuk is considered an authority on hotel, management, tourism and cultural issues. He has held several executive level Catering and Convention positions in Las Vegas and opened the convention facilities at the Tropicana hotel.”
The group likewise visited the Singapore Tourism Board, where they were briefed by the Manager, Ms. Hawamah Abu Bakar of the International Marketing Division. They also paid a visit to St. Joseph’s School, where Br. Michael gave them a lecture about the school as well as a tour around the campus.
Other highlights of the educational trip was the visit to Sentosa Island, Night Safari, and Jurong Bird Park. Sentosa Island, which used to be a mere fishing village, is now one of the most popular island resorts in Singapore. The Night Safari, as described in their official site, “...is the world's first wildlife park built for visits at night, the Night Safari is not like any ordinary zoo illuminated by the night or a modern version of nocturnal houses found in many zoos around the globe.” Jurong Bird Park, as promoted in their webpage, “...is a 20.2 hectare open-concept park. It is the largest in the Asia Pacific and the best in the world. Its collection of more than 9,000 birds from 600 species is among the largest in the world. The Park specialises in birds from Southeast Asia.”
Included in the city tour orientation were Chinatown, Little India, Merlion Park, and Suntec City among others. A guide to shopping also formed part of the trip. For high-end shopping, the Takashimaya Department Store is most recommended. For bargain shopping, on the other hand, the “Lucky Plaza” is best option. The students also had a taste of dining in fine restaurants in various locations in Singapore, where they learned a variety of techniques in setting plates and in buffets.

De La Salle Lipa played host this morning in a Computer Turn-Over Ceremony held at the Boardroom of the Sen. Jose Diokno Building. The event was attended by Lipa City Mayor Hon. Oscar Gozos, DepEd Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Cristeto Pamplona, Microsoft Philippines' Academic Program Manager for Education Ms. Michelle Casio, representatives from the public school beneficiaries, and the administrators of De La Salle Lipa.
The Turn-Over ceremony is yet another historic event for De La Salle Lipa. In her message, Ms. Michelle Casio of Microsoft Philippines revealed that De La Salle Lipa is the first school to ever donate computers to the public school sector. In the past, donations came from corporate organizations. This is the first time that a donation was given by an educational institution, DLSL, to another academic unit, the DepEd public schools. Most companies even sell their computers to public schools instead of donating them. She thanked DLSL for the generosity the school has extended through the project.
In his Welcome Message, Chancellor Juan P. Lozano expressed his
gratitude to Mayor Gozos for the latter's support to De La Salle Lipa's
projects, such as the PC donation to public schools. He also mentioned
that the Project K textbooks, a project spearheaded by DLSL through the
initiative of Vice-Chancellor for Academics and Research Dr. Corazon
Abansi, are now being used in Marikina public schools. This was done in
response to the request by Marikina City Mayor Ma. Lourdes Fernando.
Hon. Oscar Gozos likewise delivered a speech where he voiced out not only his gratitude to his alma mater but also his pride in being an alumnus of De La Salle Lipa. He is truly proud of the efforts DLSL has exerted in reaching out to help the city's public schools by donating desktop computer units. He discussed that as much as the city government would like to make donations of their own, they lack the logistics to do so. The National Government itself is unable to pursue projects such as this. He emphasized that education is one of his priorities as city mayor, and that the city government is always willing to work with De La Salle Lipa in its goal to share education. He is proud to say that DLSL is living up to St. John Baptist de La Salle's ideals of educating the poor.
Dr. Cristeto Pamplona also gave a message for the attendees. He is the Schools Division Superintendent of the Lipa City Division of DepEd. He is likewise the Co-Executive Director of the Project K Management Team. The event host, Ms. Ningning Doble of the Project K Development Office, explained that DLSL will be turning over 56 desktop computer units to selected public schools in Lipa City. These computer units, however, do not come with an operating system. Fortunately, through the assistance of Microsoft Philippines, the computers will be installed with a licensed software from Microsoft.
Ms. Michelle Casio, Academic Program Manager for Education of Microsoft Philippines, explained that Microsoft's five yearold program of "Partners in Learning" (PiL) provides a "Fresh Start for donated computers."
Chancellor Lozano and Dr. Pamplona later signed the Memorandum of Agreement, with Vice-Chancellor for Administration Mr. Rex Torrecampo and a representative from the DepEd sector acting as witnesses.
The ceremony formally ended with Chancellor Lozano and Dr. Pamplona symbolically unveiling one o

Br. Manny Hilado FSC welcomed the nursery pupils last June 14, 2007 when the PLC opened its classes for this school year. The students were quite ecstatic during the balloon twisting activity held in one of the nursery classrooms. Br. Manny made sure that each pupil in class received a balloon shaped in various designs such as dinosaur, butterfly, poodle, flower, sword, star, numbers, letters of the alphabet, and crown among others.
Br. Manny Hilado FSC is currently the Vice- President for Administrative Services of De La Salle Antipolo and at the same time the Director of the Brothers’ Community. He has a deep passion for entertaining young Lasallians who are in their primary years. He finds joy when he is able to make children happy as he shares his expertise in balloon twisting. He has been traveling to different La Salle schools for a number of years now to share his talents and touch the hearts of many children through his humble way. He also made a promise that he would come back to facilitate the training for PLC teachers so they can use the balloon twisting skills as tools in teaching their subjects.
This effort was made possible by the initiation of the Vocation Office headed by Br. Ritchie Yap FSC in coordination with the Students Services and PLC Offices. Since the activity happened during the first day of school when most parents are with the kids, the event was a hit not only among the kids but also with the parents. They were very touched to see a Brother welcoming the new pupils in school.
